Process

From metadata to a permanent link

Every DRI goes through four stages. They are the same for every institution, and at each step it is clearly defined who is responsible for what.

01

The institution submits metadata

The publication’s details are sent by hand through the cabinet or automatically through the API: title, authors, source, year, pages, language and the address of the original publication. The institution confirms that the details are correct.

Responsible: the institutionEntry point: cabinet or API
02

The system checks it and forms the DRI

The completeness of the required fields, the formats and duplicate records are checked. A record that passes gets a unique identifier, which is never used again.

Responsible: the platformResult: a unique DRI
03

The record is published in the national registry

The confirmed record is placed in the open registry and gets its own bibliographic passport page. Only records in the confirmed state are publicly visible.

Result: an open passportVisibility: open to everyone
04

The link leads to the source

The DRI link takes the reader to the publication’s current address or to its passport page. If the source is temporarily down, the passport page stays open all the same and explains the situation.

Service: the resolverThe link never changes

Metadata fields

The fields below are the basis of an article’s record. Depending on the type of publication, further fields may be required.

FieldStatusNote
TitleRequiredThe article's title in its own language.
AuthorsRequiredAs printed in the document. Given and family names separately are better but not required; otherwise the full name is kept as it is.
Language of publicationRequiredThe article's language, not the interface's.
Publication dateRequiredAt least the year. A full date is kept as well when it is known.
AbstractRequiredTZ 5.7 marks it mandatory for an article.
KeywordsRequiredBetween three and fifteen.
PDF fileRequiredIt must be a PDF, and that is decided by the bytes rather than by the extension. The file stays private.
Journal and issueOptionalWith a known issue the journal code and the issue appear inside the DRI. Without one the short form is issued and can be corrected later.
Pages, UDC, licence, external linksOptionalKept when present and never invented when absent (D03).

What happens when a record is updated?

Metadata may be corrected, or the source’s address may change. In such cases the identifier does not change — only the record’s content is updated, and the date of the change is recorded.

Identifier

Never changes and is never reused.

Metadata

Updated at the institution’s request; the date of the change is shown in the passport.

If you find an error

Report it through the “Report an error” link on the passport page.
